Thinking About Going With Rooftop Solar Heating Panels? Think Again...
Solar heating panels on the roof have many disadvantages.
1. It's expensive to install. If you get a quote for pool solar get ready for sticker shock. $10,000 is not uncommon.
2. It doesn't perform. Customers tell me all the time how disappointed they are with the heat output of the solar panels. They only work if the sun is out and really only 3 months out of the year. So you can't truly set the temperature you'd like such as 85 degrees. Most solar users crank the controller temp all the way up and hope for the best.
3. It will eventually leak and damage your roof sometimes causing roof leaks. It will rust out your gutters. Replacing and fixing the panels becomes a common occurrence.
4. It's not free heat. Contrary to what the solar sales guy will tell you. Running the water through the solar panels is not free. It puts a heavy load on the filter pump (especially 2 story houses) which in turn makes the pump draw a lot more power to work harder. I had one customer that recently switched to an electric heatpump with me, that said his power bill went up $300 a month when he turned on his pool solar and it barely added any heat.
5. At least half of the new heatpumps I install are previous solar heating users. Customers are converting to heatpumps now that had, or have solar because it doesn't work. Or they just had to replace the roof and they do not want to damage it again with pool solar.
I hope this sheds some light on why I dislike solar panels so much. I used to install solar panels years ago, but I never would now. Electric heatpumps are the best way to go.
